Outcome of The KidsRights MDGs Conference 9th July 2010: The Johannesburg Call to Action

-------------------------------------------

The KidsRights Foundation, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, former President F.W. de Klerk, the 1Goal Campaign and the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, would like to invite you to participate in the KidsRights Millennium Development Goals Conference on July 9th 2010 at the Emperor’s Palace, Johannesburg. KidsRights is a Dutch organization working in many different countries to promote children’s rights. KidsRights has initiated the International Children’s Peace Prize and co-operates closely with Nobel Peace Laureates in promoting children’s rights through this platform.

With the support of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, The F.W. de Klerk Foundation, The 1Goal: Education for All Campaign and the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, KidsRights wants to take advantage of the special opportunities presented by the World Cup, and the presence of the global media, to focus attention on the plight of children and on the steps that must be taken to ensure that they will benefit from the implementation of the UN Millennium Development Goals. The MDGs, which must be achieved by 2015, are extremely relevant for the well-being of disadvantaged children everywhere. However, in a world dominated by so many other pressing issues, the problems that the world experiences in achieving the MDG targets affecting children, too often fade into the background.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and former President Mr. F.W. de Klerk will co-chair the Conference and join KidsRights in calling upon the attention of the world: we have to realize the current situation of children worldwide and the distance we still have to overcome to achieve the MDGs, also for them. The two Nobel Peace Laureates will address the Conference on the progress that has been achieved thus far in implementing the MDGs affecting children, and on the steps that still need to be taken.
In addition, former winners of the International Children’s Peace Prize will share their views on the role that the MDGs can play in promoting the wellbeing of children throughout the world.

We hope you will join us on this important day!
